NEW YEAR'S BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS
Every January 1 we vow to make changes to improve ourselves and our lives in the year ahead. And by early February we've usually drifted back to our old habits in defeat. This year, why not give yourself a break and make some beauty resolutions that are easy to keep? A few simple tweaks to your routine can make a big difference in how you look and feel.
Apply SPF 50 sunscreen every single day! Even in winter! Did you know that harmful UVA and UVB rays can go right through a glass window? Sun exposure causes premature aging and is the single greatest influence on the condition of your skin. Besides applying sunscreen liberally on your face and neck, smooth it on your décolleté and hands. Reapply during extended sun exposure.
Remove your makeup every night! No excuses! Each night that you sleep in makeup, it clogs your pores and exposes your skin to damaging free radicals, which lead to lines and wrinkles, not to mention breakouts. A good night's rest is called beauty sleep because your skin regenerates at night. Sleeping in makeup robs your skin of the chance to recover from the day's environmental stressors and diminishes the potency of your treatment products, which work best when applied to freshly cleansed skin. For best results, suds up with a gentle foaming cleanser. In a pinch, use a makeup wipe and add a few drops of cleansing oil.
Don't over-tweeze, please. There you stand, tweezers in hand, ready to pluck a few strays. Once you're in front of that super-magnifying mirror, it's easy to get carried away, and before you know it, you've lost perspective — literally — and removed a crucial chunk of your left eyebrow. Which may never grow back. Now you're really plucked....
Fashion changes, and over the years, brow styles have boomeranged from anemic to abundant: Marlene Dietrich's Roaring Twenties pencil-thin arches to Brooke Shields' 80s-era caterpillars. (These days, British model Cara Delevingne's teeming tufts set the standard for full-browed beauty.)
Whatever the trend, your brows should flatter you. Let 2019 be the year you really get your brows in shape by going to a pro. They'll probably tell you to unhand the tweezers for a month or two, let your brows grow out, then come back to have them groomed properly.
Give skin products enough time to see if they work. When you try a new treatment product, don't bail on it too quickly. In a middle-aged adult, it can take a skin cell about 28 days to form in the deepest layer of the epidermis and work its way to the surface, so if you're trying a new anti-aging cream or serum, give it at least five or six weeks to see if it works for you.
Make time for "me time."
Every day, pamper yourself at least long enough to complete your beauty routine. Every week, give yourself time to perform self-care tasks that make you feel good: A relaxing bubble bath, mani/pedi, or even a quick revitalizing face mask can really boost your spirits.
You love you just the way you are.
With all the filtered photos on Instagram, unrealistic celebrity standards of beauty, and body shaming these days, it's easy to get stuck in a cycle of comparing ourselves to others and feeling we come up short. Stop the madness! This year, make a commitment to remind yourself often that you're beautiful in your own way. Stick a note on your mirror, set a reminder on your phone, tell Siri to repeat it out loud every day — whatever it takes. Get in the habit of self-care and self-love!
Make 2019 your best year yet!
